Ground cover planting has a valuable purpose in landscape design, both commercial and residential as they can be used to
- help suppress weed growth.
- help reduce erosion by stabilising slopes and banks as they bind the soil together.
- fill spaces, add foliage and flowers.
Hence the words ground cover, this category of plants spread to approximately 1m wide and will generally grow fairly low to the ground. There are also prostrate ground covers available that grow no higher than 10-20cm. Some species will continue to spread by producing roots on each new stem, where as others have a central tape root and trunk.
